What change do you seek?
What would you do if there were no limits and nothing was holding you back? Sometimes it’s hard to think about change. We human beings are often opposed to it. But, why? Because it can be frightening or tiring. You could fail and be disappointed. You don’t know where to begin and sometimes it’s easier to stay where you are.
After 20 years working in corporate America, it slowly dawned on me that this was not my calling for the rest of my career. I knew I had at least 25 more years of work and I wanted to do something that held more meaning for me. The company was great, but there was something missing. I needed a change. I did a lot of soul searching and yes, logged some hours with a therapist. I realized that my true calling had always been in the back of my mind. I wanted to be a counselor.
This would mean taking a huge leap to a completely different career. The really big goals are never reached overnight, but they do start with taking one step. So, I enrolled in a master’s program. I hadn’t taken a college class in almost 20 years and I had to start with statistics. I hate math. It was a struggle. During this 8-week crash course I got to know the tutors at my university very well. I had to swallow my pride as I was schooled by students half my age. By working hard, I proved to myself I could do this. Maybe this change was possible! So I signed up for two more classes. Over the next three years I inched my way closer to that master’s degree.
After months of planning, I was prepared to take the biggest leap. It was time to leave the safety net of my full-time job. All I had to do was jump. But was I emotionally ready for this change? I was scared. What if I fell? What if I did not succeed? I told people close to me that I felt like I “was on the precipice of greatness.” My sister reminded me that was a wonderful place to be and I knew it was time to jump. I quit my full-time job the next week. I’m now completely focused on finishing my master’s degree and working as a counseling intern. I’m so happy I made the leap.
I still have a long road ahead of me before graduation. I tell myself that the time will pass anyway. Shouldn’t I be working toward something great?
So, what would you do if nothing was holding you back?
Here are some options to help you explore what leaps you need to make in your life. Make a list. Talk with a trusted friend or family member. Journal. Pray. Cry. Exercise. Scream. Take small step towards creating the change you desire. Do whatever you need to figure out what that thing is for you. Then take that first step.
At any moment in time, we are all on the precipice of greatness. Find people who will cheer you on. If you’re lucky, they may even hold your hand and leap with you.
